Snowboards were built for riding powder and in the right hands float effortlessly through the soft snow giving you a smile from ear to ear. Its hard to experience this feeling in any other sport.
Let us take you away from the crowds and show you some of Chamonix’s best kept secrets and pockets of goodness. The terrain in Chamonix is literally limitless for the off-piste focused rider with fresh tracks and lines always available for those that seek it.
Choose from 3 different sessions to suit your ability level and experience. We cater for groups of 1-6 people.
Off piste snowboarding intro
These sessions combine the perfect mix of riding skills and backcountry education.
We teach the skills to effortlessly float through powder fluidly off piste, using the slack country progressing through to the true backcountry. You will learn to safely and effectively use a transceiver for search and rescue. Also hoe to choose the best lines avoiding possible hazards. You will leave buzzing and wanting more.
Split boarding intro
Get away from the lifts and reach peaks that others can only dream about. Split boarding has come a long way in snowboarding allowing riders to explore even deeper into the backcountry and get the great feeling of earning their turns.
We will introduce you to the equipment and get you comfortable skinning up the slopes and away from the crowds. We will also teach you avalanche safety skills.
Bespoke off piste / backcountry / split boarding tours
If you already have some backcountry skills and avalanche awareness under your belt then let us take you take you on an adventure.
We use our local knowledge and skills to design a bespoke full or half day around your ability, level and what you would like to explore around the Chamonix valley.

Backcountry/Splitboard Session FAQs
Chamonix has so much to offer with its vast backcountry potential. There is something to suit all levels. Being a confident rider is keen to getting the most out of these sessions. For safety reasons we ask that you be of level 6 or higher on our scale.
It is essential to be in good physical condition to get the most out of split boarding.
It really helps us to know your level of riding and previous snowboarding experience prior to your lesson so that we can plan accordingly. You can find out where you fall on our scale here.
Off piste intro and Split boarding intro take place in Le Tour, Grand Montets, Flegere and Brevent.
Bespoke tours and more advanced backcountry/split boarding lessons take place in the above areas and/or the wider Chamonix valley area.
All off piste, backcountry and split boarding lessons are available for either a half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours).
All backcountry lessons are delivered by experienced BASI L4 ISTD ISIA with French carte pro equivalence and will take you on non glaciated terrain.
Onyx snowboard instructors are some of the most highly qualified and experienced snowboard instructors in the Alps with a die hard passion for backcountry riding and all it has to offer.
All lessons require serviceable offpiste safety equipment, which can be hired from rental shops in Chamonix:
- Transceiver (with full battery)
- Shovel and probe
- Back pack
For split boarding lessons you will need to provide your own poles, skins, split board etc If you wish to hire this equipment we can recommend rental shops in Chamonix to help you.
For off piste lessons it is not essential to ride an off piste specific board but please bear in mind boards designed for off piste riding are likely to perform better than those designed to ride terrain parks. An inability to ride certain conditions may inhibit where we can ride for safety reasons.
Friends are always welcome to join you on a private backcountry adventure. We run from 1-6 people in one lesson. All group members must meet the minimum level requirements. We will always choose terrain appropriate for the least experienced member of the group.

All lessons will require balance to be paid in full at the time of final booking in order to reserve your chosen dates and times.
All Onyx private backcountry/split board session include tuition and use of our off piste safety bags only, so you’ll need to make sure you’ve got:
- Lift pass for the areas you intend to ride during the lesson
- Riding gear (split board/board, boots, bindings, skins, poles, clothing etc)
- Winter sports insurance specifically covering you for off piste snowboarding
