We’re often asked to recommend places for clients to eat lunch while up in Avoriaz. There are heaps of tasty restaurants and a lot comes down to the style of food you fancy along with your budget.
Taking a wide range of factors into consideration, here are the Onyx Snowboarding Team’s top 10 best places for lunch in Avoriaz as of Feb 2017.
10) l’Alpage du Crot – Le Crot Prodain home run
This little gem is located on the blue ‘Le Crot’ home run on your way to the bottom of Prodains, roughly around piste marker 20. A charming and characterful place that cooks their handmade tartiflette on a wooden range in the dining room and man it is tasty! Super small alpine fare menu that also offer sandwiches, but as a warning this place easily gets packed out so taking the effort to time your arrival is well worth the reward.
We recommend:
Tariflette, cold cut meats, hot chocolate (block of dark chocolate melted in it).
Rough price per person:
€10 – €20
9) Refuge l’ Abricotine – bottom of Les Brochaux chair
A refuge and a restaurant combined, giving you the option of staying overnight in the dorms if you’ve had one too many or missed the last lift! Hearty savoyard style food, along with a good range of crepes and regular snacky offerings. They have both table and window kiosk service which can be confusing, so make sure to check in with someone when sitting down. Heaps of outside seating for sunny days.
We recommend:
Crepes, steak, panini, salads.
Rough price per person:
€7 – €30
8) Le 155 Steak House – Avoriaz town centre
If you fancy a change from the usual alpine fare, this is a great although pricey option. Not exactly vegetarian friendly (4-5 dishes max) but a range of quality meats and wines. Indoor and sunny outside seating areas.
We recommend:
Entrecôte, Chimichurri style beef, burgers, tuna or beef carpaccio, Italian platter.
Rough price per person:
€25 – €40
7) Happy Hours – Bottom of the Ardent bubble
A seasonaire favourite and definitely one for Wednesday après antics. It’s all about strong tex-mex style flavours and reasonable prices. Offering an outside heated tent area with high tables, plus a few tables inside should it be a little chilly.
We recommend:
Tacos, burgers and hotdogs in a variety of flavours. Salads are also really good.
Rough price per person:
€10 – €15
6) Les Trappeurs – top of Prodains Express gondola
Speed of service is important and 95% of the time we’ve eaten here these guys have been RAPID! Prices are more on the pricey side but the food is awesome and the portions are hearty. With a range of tasty traditional alpine dishes, meat, salads, omelettes, fish, pasta dishes, kids menu and even a simple crock monsieur. This season they’ve been firing up the outdoor BBQ next to the drinks tent a lot too, with local sausages and burgers. They also serve the most monstrous cote de boeuf we’ve ever seen, a whopping 1kg plus served with a whole heap of sides and bone marrow! Good amount of inside seating but arrive earlier if it’s snowing to secure a table, heaps of outdoor tables too.
We recommend:
Omelettes, salads, any of the savoyard dishes, cote de boeuf, tariflette, fish.
Rough price per person:
€15 – €40
5) Mamo’s Cafe – Linderets bowl
Located in Linderets bowl towards the far end of the cafe/restaurant block, Mamo’s cafe (not to be confused with Mama’s in Morzine) offers simple but super tasty fare and generous potion sizes. We think their Jackson burger, which comes with goats cheese and honey, is one of the best available in town. Plus their buckwheat pancakes are more of meal than it may first appear. Cosy inside and heated outside seating for varying group sizes.
We recommend:
Jackson burger, buckwheat pancakes/crepes, lasagne and desserts.
Rough price per person:
€7 – €15
4) Le Chaudron – Les Linderets ‘goat village’
First thing to note is that booking for lunch here is essential during peak times and do expect the service to be leisurely. You are however treated to some amazing alpine food and big portions to boot! The goat village is a pretty place so grab the outdoor seating (with blankets) if available for a great ambience while eating.
We recommend:
Cheese fondue, omelettes, burgers, tartiflette, crepes, ribs, the veggie soup and desserts!
Rough price per person:
€10 – €30
3) La Kinkerne – Bottom of Prodains Express gondola
New owners and an awesome menu update have made La Kinkeren one of the best lunch spots in Avoriaz. A great range of salads, pastas, burgers, a selection of sandwiches to eat in or take away plus one of the most diverse and tasty veggie selections going. When snow allows you can ride to the door, indoor and outdoor tables available.
We recommend:
Goats cheese pasta, all of the salads, take away sandwiches, chicken burger (actually chicken breast), sweet potato burger.
Rough price per person:
€7 – €15
2) Changabang – Top of Prodains Express gondola
Yes the queues can be long and regularly the service is painfully slow, but we the hungry snowboarder world still love Changabang’s slightly naughty tex mex and burger fare! A warning to vegetarians don’t ask for a veggie burger, you’ll just get a bun and salad! Sunny outside deck and heaps of inside tables, this place regularly gets busy. TOP TIP – if just ordering drinks and there’s a long queue, then head to the left of the bar near the cash register where they’ll serve you ahead of the food queue.
We recommend:
Chicken tortilla, baguettes, curly fries, nachos (they’re massive), baguettes and burgers.
Rough price per person:
€5 – €15
1) Carrefour – Avoriaz town centre
That’s right, a supermarket! If that instantly puts you off then simply head back down this list, but hear us out as in our eyes Carrefour in Avoriaz deserves the top spot.
It’s ride in/ride out, with a close to zero serving time and massive (obviously) range of ready to go food including: sandwiches, salads, pastries, fruit, meats and even hot pasta/burger/soup options thanks to the 2 microwaves at the entrance.
When it’s sunny use your board as a bench and sit outside with your mates, when it’s cold or snowing there’s a little area inside the door to keep warm. Or take your food with you to eat on the chair, in the park or at your favourite spot and enjoy the mountain view.
We recommend:
Microwave pasta dishes, sub €1 drinks, prepared salads, fresh pastries, fruit, sandwiches, cheeky beer.
Rough price per person:
€2 – €5
