Intro to off piste snowboarding

Learn the technical skills to float through off-piste terrain with fluid and effortless style, while covering all basic safety knowledge such as transceiver search and rescue, line selection and hazard identification.
Intro to split boarding
Who needs a chairlift?! Split boarding is a liberating and rewarding development in snowboarding, allowing riders to explore even deeper into the backcountry and truly earn their turns.
Covering the same foundation content as our other courses, we introduce you to the equipment and skills required to skin efficiently into a backcountry wonderland.

Take advantage of our local knowledge as we design a full or half day bespoke around your ability level, exploring the best off-piste terrain that Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets and the Portes du Soleil area has to offer.

The PDS area is truly awesome and we can find off piste runs to suit most levels. Being confident on your board is key in helping you enjoy this type of lesson to the full, so for this and safety reasons we ask that you be of level 6 or higher on our scale.
Additionally due to the inherent physical nature of split boarding lessons we recommend that you be in good physical shape and at able to.
It helps for us to know roughly what level you are already riding at, so that we can plan your lesson ahead of time. You can find out where you fall on our scale here.
Intro to off-piste snowboarding and into to split boarding lessons are available in Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets.
Bespoke tours and more advanced off piste lessons can also take place in these resorts or in the wider Portes du Soleil area.
All off piste, backcountry and split boarding lessons are available for either a half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours).
All lessons are delivered in English by one of our British snowboard specific instructors. Every member of our team in France is qualified to BASI L4 ISTD ISIA with French carte pro equivalence.
The Onyx team are one of the highest qualified and most experienced in the alps, all enthused with a genuine passion for the sport and a simple goal of helping all levels of rider love snowboarding as much as we do.
All lesson include the use of one of our offpiste safety packs, which contain:
- Mammut Barryvox Element transceiver
- Shovel and probe
- 15L ak back pack
- A security deposit will be taken against a credit card for each pack used by your group
For split boarding lessons you will need to provide your own split board, skins, poles etc.
We can recommend rental shops in town who can help with this.
For other off piste lessons while a powder specific board is not essential, please keep in mind those designed for off piste riding are likely to perform better than those designed for park and inability to ride in certain conditions will limit where we can take you for safety reasons.
Of course. Private lessons backcountry snowboarding lesson can be booked for 1 - 6 people in a single group and check the price list for total costs. All group members must be at the minimum ability level or higher and we always ride terrain to the ability of the least experienced person in your group.

All lessons require full balance payment at the time of booking to reserve your chosen dates and times.
All Onyx private backcountry/split board session include tuition and use of our off piste safety bags only, so you’ll need to make sure you’ve got:
- A lift pass covering the appropriate area(s) you want to ride
- Riding kit (board/splitboard, boots, bindings, clothing etc)
- Have winter sports insurance including specific cover for off piste snowboarding with a guide
